![]() ![]() You can kind of “fake it” with the Novation Launchkey units by using channel aftertouch from the pads while playing keys, but that is an inelegant workaround that creates problems with performance in other ways if you are trying to have the usual keybed-with-aftertouch experience. I think these are great values, though I do want my main keyboard to have aftertouch on the keybed itself even if just channel aftertouch. The arpeggiator’s mutate mode and deviate mode for arpeggiation rhythm is so cool, too. Synth-action more than semi-weighted feeling, good velocity sensitivity. They don’t have the best keybeds in terms of features, but they’re far from the worst feeling at the same time. I had a Launchkey Mk3 49-key also and loved it while I had it. I use the pads on my Launchkey 37 Mk3 so, so much, the user programmable mode is awesome and you can create some great textures using the aftertouch on the pads to give more control after the note is played. Their Launchkey Mk3 don’t have keybed aftertouch, but they do have polyphonic aftertouch on their pads and they have good pads. My current dream keyboard is one of their 61SLs – makes me think of the Wayne’s World scene, “oh yes… it will be mine.” I love their Launchkey Mk3 keyboards so much that I ended up getting a 37-key to use as a secondary input without taking up the same, unbroken space as a larger-than-49-key board, and for its unique functions also (more on that in a sec). Novation makes awesome stuff for the money. Read on for information relevant to boards that are 61-key and under.ġ. ![]() My quick impression was there are not that very many options for good 88-keys at good prices, but it also wasn’t even remotely something I could fit into my studio area so I didn’t spend too much time thinking about it. Quick note, for size reasons I capped my search at 49-key boards, but these have 61-key versions available. Serum and the Akai MPK249 both first arrived in 2014, but hold up well in 2021! ![]()
